Preservation & Access Project

Phase I

Fortified by donations from listeners to Pacifica Radio stations and visitors to Pacifica websites, PRA worked with experts in recorded sound preservation and access to conduct preliminary assessments of the physical state of the collection, as well as to explore ways to improve the public access catalog.

  • Read the Phase 1 assessment report (or download a PDF copy).
  • Read the final report, which includes a list of the cultural heritage tapes that a distinguished panel of advisors selected for preservation.

Phase II

In 2004, both the NEA and the Recording Academy elected to award PRA with renewed grants to begin Phase II of the project. Additional funds were contributed by Pacifica radio listeners and participants in the Adopt-a-Tape program.

Ready the Phase 2 assessment report prepared by Freedom Archives director Claude Marks, who visited PRA in October 2004.

In 2005 PRA will complete the process of identifying the first 100 tapes to undergo special preservation procedures. It also plans to improve the description and organization of tapes in the collection in order to faciliate public access for research, entertainment or educational purposes.

Transcripts of the following radio programs are available here in pdf:

More transcripts will be posted here soon.

The Preservation & Access project is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Recording Academy, supporters of the Pacifica Radio Archives and listeners to Pacifica Radio stations WBAI, WPFW, KPFA, KPFK, KPFT.
