Honoring the Elders: Jessica Midford, Decka, and Studs Terkle
Description
After an illuminating introduction by Pat Scott, CEO of Pacifica, Jessica Midford reads from "Outside the Magic Circle," and Studs Turkle eulogizes the 1960's movement, then tells stories about Virginia Derr, who is from Montgomery, Alabama; about Mr. Smith, a self-declared anti-semite; and about Jerome Serby. Studs Turkle goes on to talk about the decay of the trade unions, specifically former president Ronald Reagan's effect on the air controllers union. Turkle also comments on P.A.T.C.O., newspapers, and a union activist in the historical Flint, Michigan sit-down labor landmark. Turkle comments on today's youth, then praises Jessica Midford for her inspiring life. Midford explains that she is a product of her environment. Turkle talks about his encounter with Bertrand Russell. Turkle talks about the Atlanta airport, tells a story about an experience he had in the nearby train station, and comments on Ohio car makers. Decka sings, then talks about her experience writing a book about embalming. In ending, Turkle quotes Einstein. Recorde on November 4, 1995, as a community event held to raise funds for KPFA.
