Interviewed by Josie Cotoggio. Feminist magazine author bell hooks discusses her latest book, Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self Recovery. She points to its unique political-social approach which is different than most self help books. Hooks traces the impact of historic slavery upon the African American family, the female as family head tradition, and the perception of class among African Americans. Next, hooks discusses the book she co-authored with Cornel West, Breaking Bread, as well as the images of Blacks in the media. Sexuality is typically overlooked within the community, hooks continues, and that African Americans must learn to discolose their sexuality without fear of ostracization. The core to this process, she argues, is by loving onself. She concludes by warning against adopting the passive consumer mentality, for only by active participation can change occur.
