Description:

Scholar and author Richard Rodriguez speaks at a UCLA book signing for his latest work, "Day of Obligation." He is introduced by UCLA Chicano Studies Librarian Richard Chabran, who critiques Rodriguez's first book, "Hunger of Memory," which seems to present a negative image of Chicanos and Mexican culture. Next, Rodriguez presents insights from his recent work, paying particular attention to: ethnic-social-national idenity, history, U.S.-Mexican relations, United States oppression, ethnocentrism, imperialism, inter-class relations, Chicanismo, and Americanism. Chabran concludes with an analysis of Ridriguez's thoughts and perspectives.
