Description:

A chronology of the student free speech movement in the early 1960s produced by Robin Steinhardt and Philip Maldari for the KPFA 30th anniversary celebration in March 1979. This program uses cuts from the record "Is Freedom Academic?" created by KPFA in late 1964, which features recordings of the rally and sit-in at Sproul Hall, faculty press conference, meeting of the Academic Senate, and statements by Free Speech Movement leader Mario Savio. This retrospective also includes pre-recorded songs of the period, and a contemporary interview with Bettina Aptheker regarding her memories of the time.

The KPFA 30th Anniversary Celebration featured retrospective programming for each year of KPFA's broadcast. This and all programming broadcast on March 22, 1979 referred to the year 1964.
