Description:

Rituals For Our Times : Celebrating, Healing And Changing Our Lives And Our Relationships / Janine Roberts| interviewed by Pam Burton. - Janine Roberts, Director of Family Therapy of the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts and co-author of "Rituals for our Times." She begins by discussing simple daily rituals, family traditions, and how ritual shapes interpersonal relations. She goes on to examine the emotional impact of "big" holidays, and how the broader society does not allow for ethnic ritual celebrations. Disfunctional families, she continues, have to curtail ritual to avoid conflict. Families also place pressure upon members to maintain ritual in an unchanged form. Ritual, Ms. Roberts concludes, is vital for building the self. - RECORDED: KPFK, 21 Oct. 1992. BROADCAST: KPFK, 25 Dec. 1992.
