She begins by discussing simple daily rituals, family traditions, and how ritual shapes interpersonal relations. She goes on to examine the emotional impact of "big" holidays, and how the broader society does not allow for ethnic ritual celebrations. Disfunctional families, she continues, have to curtail ritual to avoid conflict. Families also place pressure upon members to maintain ritual in an unchanged form.
