Oil, Schoenman argues, is the key to understanding the imperialist history. He outlines the birth of Kuwait from the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the creation of an international oil consortium in 1920, and the ongoing British rearrangement of the Middle East. The United States took over the dominant role following World War II, with the CIA at the core of that effort.
