The History Of My People : An Autobiography Of An Indigenous Alaskan / Mary Lockwood| interviewed by Bob DeBolt. - Mary Lockwood, a Native American writer and artist from Unalaklut, Alaska, discusses the history of her people and herself. She traces the 7,000 year history of her village and the traditional ways of dealing with the arctic environment. When Alaska became a State, her village was invaded by representatives of the United States government. Her grandfather, and other village leaders, were ignored by the incoming United States Airforce. Her people have been waging a war against assimilation ever since, with a formerly independent people becoming wards of the U.S. Lockwood goes on to trace her personal experiences with White missionaries and writers, how she earned a scholarship to U.C. Santa Cruz, and the culture shock when she arrived at College in 1970. She concludes by warning of the potential destructive force represented by Television, and her struggle to become a recognized writer. - RECORDED: Santa Cruz, 1992.
