Description:

Recording of Hungarian-American cellist János Starker (1924-2013) giving a masterclass in technique and musicianship at WBAI's Free Music Store on December 8th, 1971. Starker is introduced by WBAI's Barbara Oka and is joined on stage by Hungarian-American pianist György Sebők (1922-1999). Starker illustrates for the audience the physical relationship between the cellist and the instrument and how it affects the quality of the sound produced. Starker plays the Sarabande from J.S. Bach's Cello suite no.2 in D minor, BWV 1008, the Bourrée from Bach's Cello suite no.3 in C major, BWV 1009. Alfredo Piatti's Caprice no. 7 in C for solo cello, and the 3rd movement, Allegro molto vivace, from Zoltán Kodály's Sonata for solo cello, op.8. Sebők performs a Bach piano sonata. Produced by David Rapkin.

This recording was formerly cataloged as BC0709.08. Slight distortion around 00:41:43-00:41:47.
