Description:

Examination of U.S.-Puerto Rican relations and the proposals for creating a commonwealth out of Puerto Rico.|PUERTO RICO : PERMANENT COLONY, STATE OR INDEPENDENT NATION? / Produced by Paz Cohen. - Discussion of the present status of Puerto Rico: a proposed Compact of Permanent Union between Puerto Rico and the United States would formalize the island's status as property of the U.S. with commonwealth status. This would exempt Puerto Rico from minimum wage and environmental protection laws in order to reverse Puerto Rico's rising (45%) unemployment rate. Opponents want either statehood or independence. Statehood would give Puerto Ricans the right to vote in presidential elections, make them subject to federal income tax, and give them the same protections extended to other citizens. Independence, some maintain, is their legal and historic right. Music by Los Guaraguao (end), 'Canto a mi pueblo'| Eddie Palmieri 'Condiciones que existen'| 'Puerto Rico' (beginning). Full track. Poor sound quality - not for broadcast. - BROADCAST: WBAI, 11 Feb 1976.
