This would exempt Puerto Rico from minimum wage and environmental protection laws in order to reverse Puerto Rico's rising (45%) unemployment rate. Opponents want either statehood or independence. Statehood would give Puerto Ricans the right to vote in presidential elections, make them subject to federal income tax, and give them the same protections extended to other citizens.
