PRA Archive #:

Description:

On October 14, 1979, thousands of lesbians, gay men, and their friends traveled to Washington, D.C. for a march and rally to demonstrate to lawmakers and to the national press that the growing movement for lesbian/gay rights and dignity of the 1970's would continue to be a strong social and political force in the 1980's. This program is an "audio scrapbook" that weaves together interviews and sound clips from the parade, including footage that was recorded on the train journey from Oakland to D.C. Among the highlights of the program is an argument between the Reverend Troy Perry of Los Angeles' Metropolitan Community Church, the first Christian church to explicitly reach out to the LGBT community, and the conservative, anti-gay Reverend Robin L. Harris, the first black elected official in Utah who laid out on the tracks trying to block the train's progress. (The last ten minutes suffer from some audio problems.) RECORDED: in Washington, D.C., October 17, 1979.
