It starts with the oral narratives of creation which underly the significance of the Black Hills to the Lakota. The program then goes on to assess attempts by the United States government to assimilate the Lakota following the region's seizure in 1877. Boarding schools and reservations were used to transform the Lakota into farmers, and the renewal ceremonies were outlawed when the people needed them the most for maintaining self identity. Many of the old ways were driven underground or abandoned entirely. - RECORDED: 1992.
