Who is delinquent and how do we know? / Fritz Redl.
Speech at the California Conference on Health, Education and Welfare on the psychological development of juvenile delinquents from normal anxiety to anti-social behavior.|WHO IS DELINQUENT AND HOW DO WE KNOW? / Fritz Redl. - Talk by child psychologist Fritz Redl who explores reasons that teenagers become delinquent, and warns that defining teenage behaviors as delinquent is not always appropriate. He identifies seven sources for delinquent behavior as: 1) peer pressure| 2) developmental crisis| 3) adult pressure| 4) anxiety and personality disorders| 5) poor impulse control| 6) disturbances of ego and superego| and 7) acting out against an immoral adult world. Redl calls for greater attention to rehabilitation that encourages growth towards autonomy and independent decision making. He remains critical of a mental health system that blames the child but fails to examine the destructive environment. - RECORDED: 2 May 1960. BROADCAST: KPFA, 14 June 1960.
