KPFA produced this biographical sketch of Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, compiled from audio clips from the Pacifica Radio Archives. Newton was murdered in West Oakland on August 22, 1989. The tape is introduced by Ginny Z. Berson. Clips include Newton's press conference at attorney Charles Garry's San Francisco office following his release on $50,000 bond; Newton speaking on June 2, 1970 from prison in San Luis Obispo, four days after the California State Court of Appeals had reversed his voluntary manslaughter conviction. Wendell Harper and Bari Scott report live from Newton's funeral services at the Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland, CA.
