Description:

George Jackson, one of the Soledad Brothers, was killed in San Quentin prison on August 21, 1971, three days before his trial for the 1970 murder of prison guard John Mills was to commence. Once the news got out, KPFA reporters rushed to San Quentin to start reporting on the scene. All previously scheduled programming was pre-empted in order to provide a clear picture of the context of George Jackson's imprisonment, including an interview conducted with him three weeks before his death, and the current information as the situation was unfolding. KPFA carried on this special programming from the afternoon of August 21 through August 23, 1971. This series also includes a final related report made on August 31, 1971.

part 1: Interview with George Jackson, July 28, 1971 -- part 2: KPFA news update, leading with the report of George Jackson's death -- part 3: San Quentin press conference, August 21, 1971 -- part 4: Roundtable discussion of reporters who had been at San Quentin and at Marin General Hospital earlier that day, Saturday, August 21, 1971, plus a phone-in interview with Bessie Phillips, mother of another prisoner at San Quentin, Jesse Lee Phillips -- part 5 (A and B): Roland Young moderates a discussion between Bobby Seale and Carolyn Craven, and Bobby Seale reads a statement from Huey P. Newton (August 22, 1971) -- part 6: Huey P. Newton statement read by Bobby Seale at KPFA -- part 7: Mrs. Georgia Jackson, George Jackson's mother, and Soledad Brothers Defense Committee press conference (August 22, 1971) -- part 8 (A and B): Press conference at San Quentin on August 22, 1971 and interviews with with George Jackson's mother Georgia Jackson, and John Clutchette's mother Doris Maxwell, outside San Quentin prison -- part 9: Marin County District Attorney Bruce Bales press conference held on August 31, 1971.
