Description:

United Mexican-american Students Symposium At Ucla / moderated by Eleasar Risco. Speeches at a conference exploring Chicano political and social activities across the United States. CONTENTS: Luis Valdez, organizer and founder of Teatro Campesino, discusses that Latino theatre group. She makes a plea for cultural pride within the community, and warns against the use of derogatory terms in common use among non-Latinos. She calls for a redefinition of "American" to include all those who live in the Western hemisphere, not simply in the United States. She next presents a brief history of Spain, and how its historical experience shapes contact in the Americas. The pressure to assimilate within the Euramerican society must be fought, she concludes, for this land is a much Latino as Anglo. RECORDED: at University of California, Los Angeles, 22 February 1968.
