Description:

Bob Lederer reports on an ACT/UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) protest at a "Quack-Busters" conference in Kansas City, Missouri. The protest intended to counter the widespread suppression of homeopathic and alternative treatments by the Food and Drug Administration. Carola Burroughs, a member of ACT/UP NY, speaks on the history of this suppression and the rise of the American Medical Association. David Belyeu[sp?], a Kansas City-based chiropractor, describes how the AMA directed its anti-quackery efforts underground following court victories by chiropractors. Monica Miller, executive director of Foundation for the Advancement of Innovative Medicine, offers a definition of "health fraud." Michael Evers, an Alabama-based attorney who specializes in alternative health care issues, explains how overzealous consumer protection laws infringe on people's constitutional rights to freedom of treatment choice. Frank Wiewel, head of People Against Cancer, describes the obstacles for testing alternative treatments. John Greenberg, member of the Alternative and Holistic Treatment Committee of ACT/UP NY, describes how ACT/UP defines the concept of "freedom of treatment choice." Actuality from the Kansas City protest. Jim Hull from ACT/UP Kansas City and Wendy Quinn from ACT/UP Chicago participate in a discussion with Lederer.<br>Part of the 1990 Pacifica National Fund Drive.
