Description:

This is a recording of a live tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., produced by Alfred S. Garrett and Odie Hawkins; hosted by Bob Cole; and made possible by a grant from the California Arts Council; and with cooperation from John W. Outterbridge, Director of the Watts Towers Arts Center. Performances include the Richard Davis Quintet; poets Wali Jalalu'Din Karim, Wanda Coleman reading from "Mad Dog Black Lady", and Kamau Daoud reading a poem by John Coltrane; actors Robin Braxton, David McKnight, and Kim Hamilton; singer Melba Joyce and trumpeter Don Cherry.

KPFK Folio, January 1982 notes: On January 16th, 1982, in the memory of Martin Luther King Jr., KPFK will present the first of what could be a series of programs at the Watts Towers Arts Center. The event will be taped live and broadcast Sunday, January 17, at 12pm and Wednesday, January 20, at 9pm. The program, produced by Alfred S. Garrett and Odie Hawkins, in conjunction with Paul Vangelisti, will feature the talents and work of the Richard Davis Quartet, Wali Jalalu' Din Karim, Wanda Coleman, Kamau Daoud, David McKnight, Gloria Delaney and Melba Joyce. A trio of mystery guests is also scheduled. The program is designed to inform, entertain, stimulate, and reveal the feelings of artists who are not being offered other outlets. The talent is there but they are not wanted by a system that has no use for their kind of truth. KPFK, in its continuing effort to offer an ever broader spectrum of ideas and cultural frames of reference, recognizes that the so-called Third World has borders that start at Slauson and Vermont. The Watts section of L.A. has given us many outstanding artists, but they are not known until they leave Watts. The first show from the Center will, we hope, alter that pattern. With a small grant from the California Arts Council and the warm cooperation of John W. Outterbridge, Director of the Watts Towers Arts Center, the show will go on. 7:00 P.M., January 16th, 1982; all of the best and hippest people intend to make a happenin' out of it. Those who can should come, those who can't should tune in the next day...it's gon' be an authentic monster.
