Description:

Charles Gray, a long time peace and social justice activists who spent 3 years in rural Nicaragua, discusses the impact of the Chamorro government's austerity program upon the poor. Basic food subsidies have been slashed, the infrastructure is disintegrating, and there is 61% undemployment and underemployment. The core of the problem is the government's failure to redistribute land as it had promised. This has caused an overproduction of cash crops for export, such as cotton and coffee, which drive down world prices and pressure to increase production. Gray discusses his and his wife's experiences working in Nicaragua.|NICRAGUA'S AUSTERITY PROGRAM : WAR AGAINST THE POOR / Charles Gray| interviewed by Bob DeBolt. - Charles Gray, a long time peace and social justice activists who spent 3 years in rural Nicaragua, discusses the impact of the the Chamorro government's austerity program upon the poor.
