Description:
Political journalist and three-time guest to the show, Barbara Erenreich discusses the Inner Life of The American Middle Class as disclosed in her book, FEAR OF FALLING. By 1990, the class system in America is starkly pronounced. With average income falling over the past 24 years (see former episode “Thanksgiving Lament†11/24/89), the working class is no longer part of the middle class. The fear of loss of affluence occupy the middle class psyche including the fears of being fired and the obsession with self-discipline. Some of the philosophic discussions include the dehumanization of the homeless as a way for the middle class to project their own worst fears of losing their place in the middle class.
