Peace And Justice In Chiapas?
Peace And Justice In Chiapas? / Michael McCaughan. - Irish Times correspondent Michael McCaughan speaks from firsthand knowledge of events in Chiapas, Mexico. Having lived and worked in Chiapas communities for over two years, he has recently documented the flight of the civilian population from the Mexican army, which remains occupying Chiapas. Aproximately 20,000 people have been displaced by the conflict, with many suffering from disease and hunger in hiding rather that returning home. Those villagers who do dare to return often find that their homes, crops, livestock, and water supply have been destroyed by the Mexican army. McCaughan goes on to examine the peace talks between the EZLN and the Mexican government, and the need for continued support from North American peace and justice movements. - RECORDED: Veterans Memorial Building, Santa Cruz, Calif., 5 June 1995.
