Description:

Talk.|SYMBOLS OF CHRISTMAS / Grace Clements. - Speech in which Grace Clements shows how the significance of Christmas has largely been forgotten. She starts with a historical background of Christmas celebrated on the 25th, and its relation to the birth of many other Gods. The renewal of the Winter Solstice on the 22nd is the climax of the year, with darkness being overpowered. She examines the traditions of: Egyptian Gnostics, the nativity, Celts, Germans, Slavs, Druids, and Norse--looking for themes which have been combined into the celebration of Christmas. She concludes by examining some of the symbols of modern Christmas: Santa Clause, gift wrapping, Cinderella, humble birth of Christ, and the Christmas dinner feast. - RECORDED: 1962.
