Pacifica Radio's live coverage of Day 3 the United States Senate Armed Services Committee's hearings on military policies concerning gay and lesbian service in the armed forces, hosted by producer Junette Pinkney and journalist and radio host Bert Wylen. The focus on Day 3's hearings is on other countries' experience with integrating openly gay men and women into their armed forces. Tom Stoddard, executive director of Campaign for Military Service, recaps the first two days of hearings. Interview with Canadian activist Michelle Douglas who fought for lesbian and gay equality rights in the Canadian military. Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA) delivers opening remarks and introduces the witnesses. Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC) and Sen. John Warner (R-VA) address the Senate. Dr. Charles Moskos, professor of sociology at Northwestern University, suggests that there may need to be a separate code of conduct for gay and lesbian servicemembers. Dr. David Segal, professor of sociology at the University of Maryland and Dr. Judith Stiehm, professor of political science at Florida International University both recommend lifting the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. Lieutenant General Calvin A.H. Waller (Ret.) opposes openly gay servicemembers in the military and decries comparisons between gays in the military and the Civil Rights Movement. Sen. Nunn asks the panelists whether allowing openly gay servicemembers would undermine unit cohesion.
